Letter to baby

Dear James Robert,

You're almost 5 months old.  I need to hit pause for a moment and capture the delight that is your current state.  While you are busy exploring the world through your mouth-- constantly chewing on your toys and hands-- I'll likely recall memories of this time with auditory cues:

-You've become my piano companion. The other day, as you sat on my lap, you tenderly yet purposefully placed your hand atop mine as I played John Lennon's Imagine.  It's become a special tradition that you listen and watch patiently while I play and from time to time you try to hold my fingers.

-The sound of you laughing punctuates our morning and nightly routine.  That baby belly laugh will never get old.  While you are certainly ticklish, your Dad and I delight that you find us increasingly funny even without tickles and we'll do just about anything to make you laugh.  The wide-mouthed, gummy smile that accompanies your laughter melts our hearts.

-Your babbling resembles the cantor of a conversation more and more.  With a clear proclamation of the "b" sound, you're on your way to being a very verbal little guy.  We're so curious to know what you'll say next as you constantly try to mimic our mouth movements and noises.

-Dancing to Otis Redding's pandora station has also become a mommy and Jamesy tradition.  You'll let me hold your hand and pretend to slow dance while smiling widely.

The hazy humid days of your first summer will surely be remembered, by me, as some of the finest.

All of my love,
Mommy
